How Clear Aligners Guide Teeth to Proper Position

If you are looking for an alternative to getting braces, then clear aligners are one option. This is a set of clear trays that you can take out. Each set of aligners will be customized to fit your teeth and move them gradually. This kind of treatment might not be for everyone. However, the right way to determine if you are a good candidate is by consulting with your orthodontist.

How do aligners work for patients?

These aligners are an alternative to traditional metal braces and can guide the teeth a bit. These use gradual force as braces do. However, no metal brackets or wires are used. Instead, each aligner is made from a strong plastic material customized to the patient’s mouth.

As the treatment goes on, the patient will switch out the aligners. Each set is slightly different, moving the teeth a bit with each set. However, only a few teeth are targeted each time. That means that the patient might not notice the results immediately.

The aligners will be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day at a minimum. The patient will get a new set every two weeks. The length of this treatment will depend on how severe the case is. The treatment might be anywhere from six months to 24 months.

Not everyone can get aligners. Young patients will have to wait until the jaw stops growing. Some cases might be better treated with metal braces. However, clear aligners have come a long way today.

Why choose clear aligners?

Some patients may have had braces in the past and now need minor corrections. Others might be in their adult years and want to avoid looking like a teen. Even older teens like the discreet nature of clear aligners. No matter what age a patient is, there are several advantages of choosing clear aligners.

First, aligners are easier to clean than braces are. That way, the patient can better maintain the health of the gums and the teeth. There are no wires blocking a piece of floss going under the braces. Plus, it is harder for food to get trapped.

Since there is no metal, the aligners are often more comfortable on the cheeks and gums. If the patient grinds their teeth, the aligners will prevent wear on the teeth. It does not matter if the aligner wears out since it will only be in for a couple of weeks. Finally, it is easier to care for the teeth in general with aligners. That might mean that patients will be less likely to have stained teeth after getting the braces off.

Visit a general dentist for clear aligners

If you are interested in straightening your teeth, you might want to look into clear aligners. There are several advantages of using them instead of metal braces. You will get to have a beautiful smile sooner. Making an appointment with your dentist will help you decide if getting aligners is right for you.
