Cosmetic Questions to Ask Your General Dentist About Your Dental Restoration Options

by | Dec 2, 2020 | Dental Restorations

Dental restoration treatments can improve the appearance of your teeth and give you a nice confidence boost. These treatments aim to restore the way that teeth look and restore their function. There are many treatments that can be used to tackle issues that affect the way teeth look. Your family dentist will create a treatment plan based on your unique dental issues and your budget constraints.

Questions to ask during your dental restoration consultation with a family dentist

Here are questions that patients should go over when consulting with a dentist about dental restoration treatments:

1. How will you go about improving the color of my teeth?

There is typically more than one way to treat any dental issue. Improving the color of a person's teeth is no different. The standard way to whiten teeth is by performing teeth whitening treatments. This involves immersing teeth in bleaching agents like hydrogen carbamide and hydrogen peroxide. These bleaching agents lift stains away and lead to noticeable results after a single session. Teeth whitening treatments are effective on stains and discoloration caused by foods/beverages, smoking and aging.

Stains caused by tetracycline antibiotics, overexposure to fluoride or tooth decay cannot be removed with teeth whitening treatments. Dentists typically address such teeth with treatments like the following.

Composite bonding: Composite resin can be applied to a tooth and used to cover up stains and discoloration. The composite can be color-matched with the patient's teeth so the restored tooth looks natural. This is the most affordable way to treat stains that cannot be whitened, but the results only last a few years.

Veneers: These thin, shells can be used to cover up stains on the front part of a tooth. The veneer blends in with the rest of the patient's teeth, so people they interact with have no idea that they have teeth covered with veneers. Veneers can last up to 15 years.

Crowns: Crowns can be used to cover up stains and discoloration when it affects all the sides of a tooth. The crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth so all that others see is the restoration. A well-maintained crown can last up to 25 years.

2. How will you go about straightening my smile?

The two most popular ways to straighten teeth are traditional braces and clear aligners. The former leads to poor aesthetics that most people would rather avoid, while the latter can barely be seen when worn.

That does not make braces obsolete, though. Clear aligners are not effective on orthodontic issues caused by poor jaw positioning, while braces are. Also, braces being a fixed device can be a benefit for people who are not disciplined enough to wear aligners as recommended.

3. How can you make my dentures more comfortable?

Patients who are tired of dealing with the poor stability that comes with dentures can explore implant-supported dentures. It involves securing the dentures to implants in the patient's jaw.
