Composite Fillings

Signs A Dental Filling Should be Replaced

A dental filling is used to seal the holes created by tooth decay. These openings are called cavities and they will continuously expand until they completely damage the tooth's structures. Cavities also increase the risk of developing a tooth infection since it can leave the contents of the pulp chamber exposed to bacteria in the mouth. Because of this risk, dental fillings are often needed. However, over-time, dental fillings can become damaged, resulting in a need for replacement. Replacement is just as important as the initial placement because more often than not, the hole has reopened, thus resulting in a severe risk to the pulp chamber.

Figuring out if a dental filling needs to be replaced

A dental filling is a durable restoration that can last up to ten years. Being able to detect when fillings are due for replacement is important since worn down or loose fillings leave teeth vulnerable to decay. Outlined below are some of the signs to take note of.

  • Cracks develop: Fillings can be worn down as a result of wear and tear. This can lead to cracks, which means irritants in the mouth like bacteria and acids are able to seep through. It typically takes years for fillings to develop cracks, but habits like teeth grinding can speed up the process. Some cracks that develop in dental fillings are visible to the naked eye, while others can only be detected using tests like x-rays, which is why visiting a general dentist is necessary.
  • Tooth pain: When dental fillings do develop cracks, cavities can form underneath them. Pain coming from a tooth that has already been restored should never be ignored. Pain is often the tooth's way of letting you know the filling has been compromised.
  • Sensitivity to cold drinks: Sensitivity is often the result of fillings that have started coming loose and no longer seal the sides of the tooth.
  • The restoration changes color: Dental fillings that are made with composite resins will pick up stains and discoloration over time. The fillings can be replaced to improve the appearance of the person's teeth.
  • The filling falls out: There is no clearer sign that it is time to replace dental fillings than when it comes out. This requires an urgent trip to the dentist so the restoration can be reattached.
  • Old appearance: Dental fillings that look worn down are a sign they need to be replaced even if they have not developed any cracks yet.

The process

Getting cavities filled up with dental fillings is a straightforward process. The dentist administers a shot of a local anesthetic and removes decayed teeth material from around the tooth. The putty-like filling is applied directly to the tooth and it hardens when exposed to air. Composite resin fillings need to be hardened with a curing light.

On the same note, when a dental filling needs to be replaced, the old material is carefully removed. Then, the tooth is cleaned out thoroughly to ensure that no debris is left behind. To complete the replacement, a new dental filling will be placed.
